One-Person Company Is Not a Scaled-Down Enterprise: Six Modules of the OPC Operating System

Much of the chaos in one-person companies stems from copying traditional corporate structures. This article breaks down OPC operations into six modules: positioning, productization, customer acquisition, delivery, retention, and compliance—offering the minimum viable approach for each.

01Why copying enterprise architecture fails

Corporate departments rely on workforce redundancy, but the core constraints of a one-person company are time and attention. When you try to wear multiple hats as marketing, sales, delivery, and customer support, what's truly scarce isn't capability—it's switching cost.

The goal of the OPC operating system is to automate and standardize every process, minimizing decision-making to a few critical nodes.

02Minimum viable approach for six modules

Each module requires only a single document to start, with no additional tools needed.

  • Positioning: Clearly state who you help and what problem you solve in one sentence, under 30 characters.
  • Productization: Package capabilities into 2-3 standardized services or products, defining deliverables, timelines, and price ranges.
  • Customer Acquisition: Select 1 primary channels and 1 secondary channels, with fixed content or outreach cadence.
  • Delivery: Establish standard workflows and acceptance checklists so clients know exactly what to expect at every step.
  • Retention: Define triggers for second-round collaborations, such as quarterly reviews, content updates, or value-added services.
  • Compliance: Prepare the contract template, invoicing method, and tax filing cycle in advance.

03The Role of AI

AI doesn't replace these six modules; it reduces execution costs across each. Content creation, customer responses, data organization, and asset production are repetitive tasks that AI can handle first.

Start by mapping out the workflow, then identify which steps can be automated with AI. Doing it in reverse often leads to buying tools that never get used.

04Where to start

If your business is chaotic, productize first. If you have no inquiries, focus on lead generation first. If delivery is always delayed, establish process documentation first.

A one-person company's operations system isn't built all at once; it evolves as order volume grows. The key is knowing exactly what you're missing at each stage.
